Brooks Koepka is knocking on the door again after hitting his approach to 25 feet on the seventh, but he just can't convert again and remains at two under.

But this is some very solid stuff from the two-time US Open champion though.

Jhonattan Vegas was the early pacesetter at last month's US PGA Championship, leading at the end of each of the first two rounds at Quail Hollow.

The Venezuelan has made a decent start here too, holing a 10-footer for a birdie two on the 13th to move to one under par.

Successive birdies on 12, 13 and 14 have put South Korea's Im Sung-jae within one shot of the lead.

He's only made the cut twice in six previous US Open appearances but he's made an excellent start at Oakmont.

Scottie Scheffler cracks his tee shot at the par-three 6th into a bunker to the right of the green and then can't hold his chip on close to the hole.

It leaves him a smidgen over 13 feet to make par and he ends up with a third bogey in four holes.

The world number one and heavy favourite looks well out of sorts at present.

Good meaty putt from Jon Rahm eats up 60 feet of the 15th green and sets up a tap-in par.

He's followed in by Dustin Johnson but he's made bogey after rough trouble earlier in the hole.

A careless bogey too for Jordan Spieth who duffs his birdie attempt and then misses from eight feet for par.

That will have jarred. Scottie Scheffler chunks his approach out of the rough on the fifth to find the green. It was the sort of shot that's harsh on the wrists and your iron flexes but he still manages to land 40 feet from the pin.

There's no birdie from there mind but it's a welcome par after the previous two holes.

Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland's travails continue as he takes three with his putter.

Sam Burns is motoring now as he makes his third birdie of the day to move to three under and move up into a tie for second.

Burns has just one top 10 in a major in his career so far, but it did come in last year's US Open so he may have finally found the key to success here.

The 14th hole is just under 400 yards but the pin is a long way back on a very deep green.

All three of this group land short of the flag, Jordan Spieth the furthest away of them. His mammoth birdie putt of almost 70 feet slides about five feet by, and the return putt drops for par.

Jon Rahm is also in safely for four, as is Dustin Johnson.

Victor Perez came through one of the qualifying events to take his place in the 156-man field at Oakmont and has made a decent start.

With five pars and a birdie on his card so far the Frenchman will be extremely satisfied.

Wow! The rarest of golfing birds makes an appearance at Oakmont as Patrick Reed makes a two on the par-five fourth hole for an albatross.

After a nice drive, Reed still has 286 yards left to the pin, and he covers every single one of them with a fairway wood to card a crazy two.

That's just the fourth albatross scored in US Open history.

World number three Xander Schauffele had a birdie-birdie finish to help make his lunch taste a little better today.

When asked if he'd like a bit of rain to soften the course up a little, he replied: "You know me, I'm sick just like everyone else. I don't mind if it's playing tough."

Brooks Koepka burns the right edge of the hole with a birdie putt on five that would've moved him into second, but he stays on two under.

Justin Thomas finds out just how tough this fescue is as he tries to open the face and play a high chip onto the green but instead sends it firing off the green left - you just can't play those shots in this Oakmont rough.

Thomas manages to get away with just a bogey though after sinking another long effort to restrict the damage to just a shot.

Scottie Scheffler goes into the Church Pews bunker on both the third and the fourth holes... he's up near the wispy stuff and punts his ball back into play.

He goes aggressive with his third but loses it slightly right and is fortunate it comes up short on the green. Things not quite going to plan for the world number one at present.

Hands on hips for Jon Rahm as a chip from just off the 13th green stops quite a way before the cup.

However, the Spaniard makes a superb par save from 12 feet to stay one over.

Jordan Spieth just misses out on back-to-back birdies but it's a safe par three for the American and he's followed in by Dustin Johnson.

Thriston Lawrence ends in style - it's only a par, but it's secured thanks to a superb pitch with his third shot that spins and stops a couple of feet from the hole.

The South African cards a three-under 67 and he'll be one behind current leader JJ Spaun overnight.

Scottie Scheffler limits the damage to a bogey and swaps spots on the leaderboard with Collin Morikawa, who knocks in a close-range putt for his three on the par-four third.

Jon Rahm putts from the very front edge of the green and judges a big breaker very well indeed, leaving a simple-enough birdie chance - but it lips out! Par for the Spaniard.
